En el presente artículo se analiza el origen y la evolución del constitucionalismo a partir de las revoluciones burguesas del siglo XVIII. Por un lado, se estudia el constitucionalismo estadounidense, nacido de la revolución norteamericana de 1776 con sus características principales y, por otro lado, se analiza el constitucionalismo europeo, nacido en Francia con la revolución de 1789, y se hace una comparación de ambos modelos constitucionales para luego entrar a estudiar el neoconstitucionalismo, que es producto del fracaso del modelo constitucional francés a partir de la segunda posguerra europea del siglo XX. Finalmente, se analiza el surgimiento de los órganos autónomos constitucionales como un replanteamiento a la teoría clásica de la tridivisión de poderes, en base a la introducción de las funciones sociales del Estado.
